A full wood store, to me is an impressive and satisfying sight. Of course I know that many of you are totally indifferent to whether a wood shed is full or empty but please consider my thoughts on the subject.
Over the past 17 years I have hacked annually at the wooded area behind our home in Gargunnock. I like this photo of our overflowing shed ready for the winter. It is amazing how much we use. Many a roaring fire in large fireplaces we enjoyed burning well seasoned wood. Coal, dirty, messy horrible smelling stuff that it is, cannot even compare. The objection to using wood is the sheer volume of work to harvest it. For me the harvesting then chopping was a pleasure. Why go to the gym or run when you can do something useful and also keep fit? Another pleasure is to horrify guests by bringing a wheelbarrow of logs through the house to top up the fires! You should see some of their faces!…that mixture of both horror bewilderment and amusement.
Each year I would requisition an old trade in 4×4 from the garage and have fun taking it into the sloped mushy paddock and, with a few challenges, bring in a huge harvest. You get warmed three times! Cutting, harvesting, then relaxing by the fire.
Being a canny Scotsman, it gave me great pleasure to have a good supply absolutely free! Often I thought that for me a better calling in life would to have been a crofter or a a new world pioneer.
Like so many other materials wood gets a fair share of coverage in the bible; here is just one example where God challenges us regarding the sheer absurdity of idols:
” Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, “Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!” And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god!” (Isaiah 44 16-17)
Bearing in mind that everything has it’s place, modern day idols are every bit as absurd! Homes, cars, sex, pets, hobbies, status, money, maybe a plane or boat…to name just a few, without even getting going on fallible celebrities! Even the believer has to guard against idolatry …perhaps you idolize a preacher? A preacher is just a signpost pointing to the great truths of scripture..at least some of them are!
Laugh all you like at the picture of an idolater in this scripture but then look at yourself? Are you EXCLUSIVELY worshiping the living and true God through whom we live , move and have our being?
In conclusion, here is an ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY which applies to each of us and comes from Ecclesiastes 11v 3:
‘in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be’
